Early College Academy
Mrs. Kathi B. Fletcher serves as the Counselor for the Pike County Schools Early College Academy. Mrs. Fletcher has 36 1/2 years experience in education with 29 of those years in counseling high school students. Enrollment in the Pike County Schools Early College Academy is open to all students enrolled in one of the five high schools in the Pike County School District (Belfry, East Ridge, Phelps, Pike County Central, and Shelby Valley High Schools). Acceptance to the academy is a competitive process. The selection committee looks at GPA, ACT, attendance, extra curricular activities, community service, and honors and awards.
Students apply for ECA during the spring semester of their SOPHOMORE year of high school. Upon acceptance, students attend classes at Big Sandy Community and Technical College's Pikeville Campus during their junior and senior years of high school in order to earn an Associate Degree in Arts, an Associate Degree in Science, or both. Students graduate from Big Sandy Community and Technical College with at least 60 college hours, totally free of charge. Classes meet on Mondays through Thursdays. Students attend their respective high schools in the mornings before college classes begin, at the end of the school day, and on Fridays (depending on high school and college schedule). Students will remain enrolled at their high schools and may participate in extracurricular activities at their high schools. Transportation can be provided. Students' tuition, cost of textbooks, and use of Mac Book is provided free of charge. Breakfast and lunch are prepared by Pike County Central High School lunchroom staff and brought to the college by School Food Service staff.

FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION High school seniors considering attending college or vocational/technical school in the fall should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) as soon as possible beginning October 1 of their senior year. You and one of your parents must also apply for a PIN (personal identificaton number) to electronically sign the FAFSA. www.pin.ed.gov
The FAFSA is the form students complete using the previous year's tax data to determine if they qualify for federal or state grants and to apply for loans. Work study, vocational rehabilitation, and many scholarships use your FAFSA information, too. Early Completion of the FAFSA maximizes chances of receiving aid! The best way to file the FAFSA is online at www.fafsa.ed.gov . * Grants: Awards based on need that do not have to be repaid. (must file the FAFSA)
* Scholarships: Awards based on some kind of special achievement, either academic, athletic, or service. These are merit based and do not need to be repaid. * Work-Study: Part-time employment that lets a student earn money toward a college education either on or off campus. (must file the FAFSA) * Student Loans: Money borrowed, either from a bank, the government or a school. A student loan must be repaid. However, low interest rates are available, and repayment doesn't start until you've either left school or graduated.
