A big "thank you" to Cathy Nichols Francisco who has honored her late father E.H. Nichols Jr. by granting a scholarship to an East Ridge High School senior. This is the fourth year Francisco has donated the funds to a senior to honor her father, a long-standing member of the Elkhorn City community who served the area for many years as its school board member. The lucky recipient this year was Murphy Deskins.
Francisco said East Ridge Basketball Coach Randy McCoy had approached her about giving to the school. "I was just waiting for someone to ask me for something," Francisco said. A 1974 graduate of Elkhorn City High, which merged into the current East Ridge High along with Millard and Feds Creek High Schools, Francisco is obviously proud of her father, his accomplishments and the East Ridge/Elkhorn community. McCoy said Francisco selflessly gives the scholarship to a deserving senior annually. Recipients are selected by a committee at the school.
Francisco and McCoy were on hand to personally present the scholarship check to Superintendent Reed Adkins on August 2 at the C.H, Farley Building, the Central Office of Pike County Schools. Adkins said the school district is very grateful for Francisco and citizens like her who take a special interest in and support the schools and the students in such a meaningful way.
